Brown’s Ferry Elementary School’s Family S.T.E.A.M. Night was a fun-filled, educational experience! The Family S.T.E.A.M. Night focus was to promote science, technology, engineering, arts and math (S.T.E.A.M.) at Brown’s Ferry Elementary for students and their families.

Third grade students began the program by explaining to everyone how Brown’s Ferry Elementary implements S.T.E.A.M. The Kindergarten students then performed an original song composed by Dr. Tully, music teacher, and arranged by Dr. Giles-Burgess, principal, based on the words of Dr. Martin Luther King entitled “The Time is Right.” Afterwards, over 100 family members worked together on learning activities in S.T.E.A.M.

Pre-K and K students and parents constructed paper airplanes.  Students followed directions from a video to create their airplane.  They took the activity further by measuring distance to see which plane went the furthest. After test flights, everyone went back to the drawing board to make changes which would make the planes’ flight longer.  Adding a component of art, the students had the opportunity to decorate their planes.  Boeing get ready for some future pilots and engineers.

First and second grade students and family members focused on Push, Pull, Roll.  The students worked together to build a ramp with K'Nex.  After they created their ramp, they rolled a ball down the ramp to see how far it would roll. The next part of the activity was to build a swing.

Excitement and air literally filled the atmosphere in the room with the third graders.  They blew up balloons. The third grade students created a STEM project using balloons and tape to build towers.  The activity was controlled fun.

Bounce…bounce…bounce. The 4th and 5th grade students and parents made a bouncy ball using borax, glue, cornstarch and food coloring. They were amazed to see the ball bounce. This group also created a paper plate marble maze game.

So, on this S.T.E.A.M. Night, Brown’s Ferry was bursting with future engineers, mechanics, technicians, musicians, artists, pilots, and more.

Brown’s Ferry truly has a special school environment as the result of home, school, and community working in harmony.  Educational opportunities, such as these, will continue to push Brown’s Ferry “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead.”

Thank you to all of our families, staff and guest volunteers who participated!
